Soccer Kids

2006.08.27 (Sun)

One of my friends, Kay, in our futsal team asked me to become a soccer coach for her kids' school soccer team. I wasn't interested at that time...

She has two kids; 3rd grader Mond and 5th grader Dia. Today, we had lunch together at the nearby Barmian restaurant, the reasonably priced chinese restaurant. The reason why we gathered was that about a week ago at the same place, we talked about kids' education and she asked me to teach kids english. I paused a couple of seconds and calmly nodded to her with a smile. I've got a bit of experience in education. I got a degree in education. Though my speciality is to teach english to high school, I taught Japanese to american kids in elementary school and junior high school when I was in Portland, Oregon.

This was the first time I met her kids. The older brother, Dia was a bit shy. And Mond seemed out going. I thought I was going to talk to kids about a plan to teach english. There wasn't that talk. Dia and Mond left right after they finished their lunch. They had soccer practice and basket ball practice.

After they left, we started talking about the plan. It's going to be a once a week session and we are going to use an instant messenger to give a remote session in between those on site sessions. I speak only english during a session and if they have questions, they must ask me in english. If there's some difficulty asking me questions in english, My girl becomes a bridge and translate their questions from japanese to english and translate back my answer to them in japanese. In this way, we hope we can build an ideal environment that they are forced to use english in order to communicate with me. I really hope this will work.

When we finished discussing that, which took about three hours, we left the restaurant and visited a local elementary school to see Mond playing soccer. He plays soccer every weekend at school. There is no official coach in the team but their parents do coaching in turn. I remembered when Kay asked me to teach her kids english, she also asked me to become a soccer coach. I didn't take it seriously but now that I saw them playing soccer on the field; I felt like I could be a coach. It wasn't too bad to play soccer with kids. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it. This can be a good way to spend weekend though.
